Do I use the base form or the continuous form in the sentence below?

- Uncle Clive recalled how his grandmother would watch him board/boarding the train for work every morning.

I know after the sense verb, 'watch', the next verb can either be base or continuous form. However, in the above, it sounds weird when I use the continuous form.

Thank you.

Can you show me some other examples when the continuous form is correct, and the base is incorrect after a sense verb?

Thank you!

1. I watched him writing a novel.
2. I watched him write a novel.
3. I watched him write a cheque.

I think 2 is not very likely because it takes a long time to write a novel.
3 is likely because it takes a short time to write a cheque.
