Hi, I am translating into Polish subtitles fror a documentary 'first earth' and I've stumbled upon one phrase I don't understand and can't find in any of dictionaries.
This is a building, that's entirely made out of|all-recycled and natural materials,
even the steel is recycled. It's a facility|that takes stuff that's going to the dump,
filters it, and sells it back to the public,|old 2 x 4's, toilets, stuff like that.
Tons and tons of stuff|goes out of the waystream, including what the building itself|is made out of.
1. What is it 2 x 4's stuff?
2. what means ' goes out of the waystream'?
Link to movie: First Earth - Film o zmianie paradygmatu "schronienia".
part 9 of 12, time 01:03:21:21
Grateful for any hints!

A 2x4 is a board. It's not exactly 2 inches by 4 inches, for reasons I don't understand, but you can translate it as "lumber."

Are you sure the word wasn't "waste stream"?

If something is removed from the waste stream, it was no long going to be thrown away, put in a land fill, discarded. It was going to be reused or recycled instead.

Thanks for help. I think you're right, that can be error in written text I had been given.
Another word I am struggling with: barn-rising. The context:
It said that there is a place|where we all belong, where time and space|is not for sale. It was so successful in building|community, it's just the barn-raising, it's not even a new idea. It's an old,|old idea that is our absolute birthright. Get together, do something|that uplifts the common life.
I know the literal meaning. But is it really what the author means?

A "barn raising" is when a family builds a new barn, but the entire town comes out to help. The family that gets the barn that time has helped others in the past and will help others in the future.

The metaphorical meaning is that we all work together to do things for our mutual benefit.
