Dear Sir or Madam,

In China, when the scores of a match was 3-1, and if we won , we say 'We won 3-1' and if we lost, we say 'We lost 1-3'. So I was surprised and felt it interesting when I searched the BNC and found whether a team won or lost, you say 'They won/ lost 3-1', as in the following sentences:

1. MILES MACLAGAN bowed out of the British Satellite tournament at
2. Eastbourne yesterday when he was beaten 6-3, 6-1 by the No1 seed, Chris Wilkinson.
3. Juventus lost 2-1 at AS Roma yesterday after missing two penalties,
4. Old Xaverians won 3-2 against Academicals and Old Swan Tech. beat De la Salle OB 6-2.

My question is: Do you also say 'We lost/were beaten 1-3' or 'We beat them/won 1-3'?

Could I ask native English speakers to help me with this question? Thank you very much.

In North America we say "...won/lost 3-1."
