To walk we need to bring our one foot ahead of the other (by lifting it in the air) and then other ahead of the first (should I be using "first" here?) foot. When I was ill I couldn't take/ move my one leg further than a few inches (so it was hard for me to walk). I couldn't even lift my one leg more than a few inches (or just one or two inches).

Please check my sentences.

To walk, we need to lift up and move our feet forward, one after another, one step at a time. When I was ill, I could hardly lift or move my legs, so it was hard for me to walk.

If I have to talk about just one leg then is it correct to say one leg? My one leg had stopped working. If I have to mention that it couldn't be moved or lifted more than a few inches then what do I need to say?

I could lift or move my left/right leg at most a few inches.

Can we use "couldn't" here instead of "could"?

"When I was ill I couldn't move or lift my left leg at most a few inches." "At most" doesn't sound right with "couldn't". Am I correct? What should I use here with "couldn't"?

When I was ill, I couldn't move or lift my left leg more than a few inches.

In my native language, there is an idiom meaning 'It is difficult to take a step of an inch'.
