Which word is correct to use?

His wedding OR marriage is near.

Wedding. Marriage is what you're in after the wedding.

And yet, strangely, the wording on a standard traditional wedding invitation invites you to the marriage of XXXX to YYYY. I've always found that odd. I'm only being invited to the wedding. I don't plan to stay by their side for the rest of their married life (and I'm pretty sure they wouldn't want me to).
