If I ask "what are you like?" - what would you answer me?
And if my question is "what do you look like?" - what would be the reply?

Is there any other way of asking about appearance in a more colloquial speech?

If you asked me "What are you like?", I would say something like "I am happy, friendly, outgoing and slightly crazy!"

If you asked me "What do you look like?", I would say "I'm average height, average weight and I have brown hair and hazel eyes."

"What am I like" I would describe my personality. If I felt snarky (sarcastic) I would compare myself to something. "I am like a cat".

"What do I look like" I would describe my physical features. Unless I still felt snarky. Then I would say "I look like a tree".

If people are taking your questions too literally, you could ask them to describe themselves or tell you about themselves.
