What do we call nations?

Please correct me. I am trying to figure out the most common ways of naming ancient nations (these are collective plural nouns as I see it ;-)):
the Egyptians
the Indians
the Celts
the Gauls
the Russians
the Vikings
the Byzantine (I wonder what was the name of their state by the way?)
the Romans
the Greek

Wikipedia says the citizens of the Byzantine empire referred to it as the Roman Empire and to themselves as Romans.

Some of those are peoples rather than nations- territories were less strictly defined in many places.
