If someone asks me: What do you do for a living?
Can I reply: I live from my work. ;-)

When someone asks "What do you do for a living?" they want to know what kind of work you do.

You can say:

I work for the XYZ Company.

I am self-employed as an artist.

I am in partnership with Mr. X and we manufacture cars.

or . . .

I am not employed at this time.

Actually I wanted to know something else.

For example there is someone who tells me: I'm selling newspapers.
I tell him with disbelief then: Are you trying to tell me that you live from selling newspapers. Is it OK to say so? Hope you understand
