There is such a sentence in a text, which is about the famous musician Joseph Haydn.

After studying music in Vienna, Haydn went to work at the court of a prince in eastern Austria, where he became director of music.

Does "director" here mean the same thing as "conductor", or else? What kind of job does "director of music" do? Thanks for your help!:?:
