what does "join in the griping" mean?

I'd like to know what does "join in the griping" in below statement mean:

But neither do you have to join in the griping which not only adds to the already sizable problem, but shuts your valve down tight.

It's not a hundred percent clear from the context, to me, because of the bit about the valve, but if it is describing emotions, then 'griping' means 'complaining' or 'moaning'. ;-)
