:)Hello Everyone,

I would like to know what 'polygamist sect' mean in the following paragraph?

Polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs was handed over to Arizona authorities Tuesday to face sex charges stemming from the arranged marriages of two teenage girls to older relatives.

Does polygamism still exist in American society or only in religious society?

Regards

Sky, the noun is Polygamy and it does still exist in some religious orders. Occasionally in the UK people not involved in religious sects are sent to court for practising polygamy.

The word actually means 'many marriages' and in some instances it is a ruse for financial gain rather than the pleasure of having more than one spouse.

It is illegal in this country and seemingly in the US.

Dear Sky: Polygamist sect refers to a group of people that believe and accept the marriage of a man with many women. This means that one man has more than one wife, and they live all together accepting this situation as common and "legal" (at least for them).;-)

It is illegal in the UK to be married to more than one person at the same time. If a man or a woman is discovered to have been through a marriage ceremony without previously having divorced, they are tried for a criminal action.

The only exception to this is if the person concerned has come to the UK from a country where multiple marriage is permitted, already having married more than one person.
