This sentence is from Scole Report
Along with the huge volume of other evidence which began with the deaths of F.W.H.Myers and Henry Sidgwick around the turn of the century, its failure to produce final conviction was suggested to us as the ostensible motive, which on the hypothesis of survival, may have bestirred the personalities apparently communicating in the present investigation.

Would you pleas tell me what "its failure to produce final conviction was suggested to us as the ostensible motive" means?

Thank you.

That sentence is not easy to read!

Somebody suggested to us that its failure to produce final conviction was the ostensible motive.

Turgid prose of that sort seems to be written purposely to thwart understanding.
