We live day by day, but in the great things, the time of days and weeks ____ so small that a day is unimportant.
This was one of China's university admission examination questions. The given answer is: "is".

My question is: What does the sentence as a whole mean? Why does the speaker say 'a day is unimportant'?

Thank you very much.

Sometimes, days are too dragging for us that we have to live through them. Say, a day on which you have to take an exam through the day.

But then, there are times when days pass off very quickly – say on your date. Days and weeks fly off past you and you won’t even mind it.

So, I think, time is the theme of the sentence; and how important and unimportant are the ways in which we represent time like days or weeks.

Hi, joham!

"Rome wasn't built in a day!" It takes time to create, develop, and maintain 'great things'. The world's greatest civilizations took centuries to develop...each generation contributing to the overall success of the society!

So, in the grand scheme of things, a 'day' is nothing more than a blip on the master calendar of life.
