When Anna was a teenager she gave away

I am wondering if my sentences are grammatically correct. Is it correct to use the word "thing" in my sentence, meaning adoption?

When Anna was a teenager, she gave away her daughter for adoption. At that time she didn't ponder much about it, but as she grew older, she could not forgive herself for doing such a cruel thing to her child.

I'd say 'think' was more appropriate than 'ponder'.

(She should tell herself that it was probably the best thing for her baby.)
