I am wondering if my sentence is grammatically correct.

When David told his friends he would leave his job, give all his possessions away to a charity, and move into a monastery, they were wagging their heads in disbelief.

When David told his friends he [STRIKE]would[/STRIKE] was planning to leave his job, give all his possessions away to [a] charity, and move into a monastery, they [STRIKE]were wagging[/STRIKE] shook their heads in disbelief.

Above is what I would write. If he really does intend to give everything to just one charity, then leave the indefinite article in. If not, remove it.

You can also use "some charity" if referring to one organization.
