1) When I was ill I couldn't sit in couch. A stack of cushions had to be made (like one cushion over the other). I couldn't lower my body to the couch level.

2) When I was ill I couldn't sit in couch. A stack of cushions had to be made (like one cushion over the other). I couldn't lower my body as low as the couch.

Please check my sentences.

Perhaps:

When I was ill I couldn't sit on the couch. Instead, I sat on a stack of cushions. I couldn't lower my body to couch level.

I'd put a comma after "ill" in Tarheel's sentence.

I couldn't lower my body as low as the couch was. Is it incorrect?
