I am wondering if my sentences are grammatically correct.

When John vowed to stop smoking, he couldn't imagine how difficult that was going to be. He stared at people puffing at their cigarettes, and the strong desire to light a one grew inside him. Five years passed since then and he had not touched a cigarette, but the desire remained the same.

I asked my father ten years after he stopped smoking if he would like to light up again, and he told me he would, more than anything. But he used to smoke about 40 cigarettes daily.
