I am wondering if my sentences are grammatically correct.

When Martin Amis appeared on a literary scene, he was hailed as a genius by some critics, while others regarded him as overrated. Opinions may differ from one person to the next, but the fact is that his latest novels left both critics and readers unimpressed.

Briefer and with fewer commas: Martin Amis was hailed as a genius by some critics when he appeared on the literary scene. Others regarded him as overrated. Opinions may differ from one person to the next, but his latest novels have left both critics and readers unimpressed.

Note the present perfect.

You can often improve the flow of a sentence by moving clauses around and removing commas.

The phrase the fact is [that] hardly ever adds meaning to a sentence.
