When the intoxicated singer forgot his text, the audience booed him off stage and threw bottles and shoes at the band. They were chased away and told never to come back again.

The "they" in your second sentence is ambiguous. Was the band chased away or the audience?

It was of course the band. I used "they" to avoid using "band" twice. Should I writer instead: "The musicians were chased away..."
