When to use an article

Hi, I would like to know how I should decide whether a noun is preceded by an article (a/an/the). Note that I am not asking when to use these articles, but whether an article itself is required or not. Regards, PS: I have read somewhere (and not able to catch hold of that source) that abstract nouns will not have articles preceding them.
