Dear teachers,
Please look at the following sentence:
He wrote the famous poem when he made a tour to ________ was once a battlefield. (where/what)

Where or what? which one is correct? Plz give me explanation.

The following is anothere question:
The new secretary is responsible and hard-working, ________ her predecessor was not.
Which word will you fill in the blank if you do not use conjunctions such as but, while, although?

thanks

In that sentence, I would use "where". That is because of the word "to". Had the sentence been "tour of", I would have selected "what". I could make a case for "what" in your sentence, but I think "where" fits the context better.

I don't think anything but a conjunction fits in the second blank. You could leave it blank if you change the comma to a semicolon.
