This is a dialogue taken from Martin Hewings's ADVANCED GRAMMAR IN USE (2005 edition). I'd like to know if there is any other tense that can take the place of the past continuous 'was visiting'. If not, why?

Or you could say "I was at some friends" OR "I stayed with xxxxx for a week"
