Whereas a few months before the opposition leader was an object of derision and scorn, today he is the major candidate for the prime minister's post in the next general elections.

You need change 'before' to 'ago': "Whereas a few months ago, the opposition leader was ...".

This is because you are writing as things are today, at present.
