A rare thunder storm hit Beijing a moment ago, which was reported by yahoo.cn. I am wondering whether I can tranlate the headline this way?

A rare heavy shower along with thunder and light hit Beijing,causing daytime as dark as night.

The amount of rain in a thunder storm is far more than a 'heavy shower".
If you don't want to use 'thunder storm', then options are 'torrential rain", 'downpour', and 'cloudburst'

A rare cloudburst along with thunder and lightning struck Beijing,

causing daytime as dark as night.: with sky black as night.
or possibly
'turning day into night.'

Note: you will notice that there is no article before 'sky'. I could also have written 'the sky'.
