Given the CAD's definitionI think you might be better off with another verb stressing the "cause and effect" issue.
That's the only part of the sentence that doesn't sound quite right to me.

But I still don't figure out why "lie in" can't express the "cause and effect" concept.
How about the following?

Whether you will succeed or not lies mainly in your hard work now.
