which can be used to modify the comparative? "too much "or "so much",or both?

For example, which of the following two sentences is grammatically correct?
1. Tom is too much taller than me.
2. Tom is so much taller than me.

Is Tom standing on a ladder? Is he up a mountain? If not, and you are talking about his physical stature, then he's not "higher" than you at all. He is taller than you.
