Which one is correct:

However wretched and piteous he is, he never hesitates in admitting his faults.

Or:

However wretched and piteous as he is, he never hesitates in admitting his faults.

Or:

However wretched and piteous as he is, he never hesitates in admitting his faults.

Your first sentence is correct.

However, if you were to replace the word "however" at the beginning of the sentence with "as", you would need the second "as":

As wretched and piteous as he is, he never hesitates in admitting his faults.

So, I understand from this that the second sentence is totally wrong or what?
