I was off sick from work.

Are you sure you haven't missed anything from the sentence?

Yes, I'm quite certain I haven't missed anything. I won't speak for the grammatical correctness of that sentence, but in the UK we regularly say "I was off sick" or "off sick from work", or even "I was off work sick".

What do you think is missing?

I was off sick from work.
I was off sick.[/

This sounds strange to me or is it not meant to be grammatical?
I was off.
I was sick.
I was off sick?

I thought this is the usual way of saying it : I was on sick leave

As I said, I made no claims for the grammatical correctness, but I can assure you that in my 21 years of working, in every job I have done, the phrase "off sick" has been used over and over again!

to be off sick is correct. if you were confused, you should have simply picked a dictionary to confirm it. Check the entry "sick", its somewhere there usually written in bold letters with the meaning attached to it. It means to be away from work or school because you are ill.
It is appropriate to say,' i was off sick ' and ' i was on sick leave'

In case anyone cares, "sick leave" wouldn't be used in the U.S. if you're simply out of work for one day because you don't feel well. "Leave" is when you are out for an extended period of time.
