Dear snade17,

After reading the following definitions you might make alone your choice.

acronym

A word typically made up of the first letters of two or more words; for example, BASIC stands for "Beginners All purpose Symbolic Instruction Code." Letters within a word are also used; for example, XML means "eXtensible Markup Language."

acronym

Word or name that is formed by joining the first letters (or the first few letters) of a series of words. For example, DOS is the acronym for Disk Operating System. An acronym is pronounceable, whereas many other abbreviations are not.

abbreviation

Shortened form of a written word or phrase used in place of the whole. Abbreviations began to proliferate in the 19th century and have been prevalent since; they are employed to reduce the time required for writing or speaking, especially when referring to the myriad new organizations, bureaucratic entities, and technological products typical of industrial societies. An abbreviation can now easily become a word, either as an initialism in which the letters are pronounced individually (e.g., TV or FBI) or as an acronym in which the letters are combined into syllables (e.g., scuba, laser, or NAFTA).

Regards.

Hi, I agree to the answer that an acronym is an abbreviation that makes a word in its own right, eg ANZAC, EFTPOS and PIN, as opposed to an abbreviation which just makes a group of letters as BNZ, TVNZ, ASB etc.
Hopes that helps:-D, Linda
