Which or that

Hi teachers!
Can we use which for both singular and plural?
1.The book which you gave me was very informative.
2.The books which you gave me was very informative.

Somebody told me that when we refer back to a plural noun, the use of which there is incorrect. Is it so? According to him, my sentence should write:
The books that I gave you was...

I would say that Relative pronouns refer to both singular and plural nouns; therefore 'which' could be used in the sentence 'the books which I gave you were...' and be correct. Also 'that' could be used as well since in defining relative clauses some rel.pronouns can be replaced by that; the relative pronoun could be also omitted in this example and have 'the books I gave you were...'
