Would you please correct the mistakes in my sentence?

While Peter's wife was undergoing an operation, he was pacing up and down the waiting room like a caged animal, wishing to be beside her.

It's not entirely clear who "he" is. If "he" refers to Peter, I would write it as follows:

While his wife was undergoing an operation, Peter was pacing up and down the waiting room like a caged animal, wishing to be beside her.

I agree with the swap of "he" and "Peter" but I would end with "wishing he was beside her" or "wishing he could be beside her". In fact, given the situation, I would probably say "at her side" rather than "beside her". "At her side" gives more of a suggestion of caring for the person.
