I read a sentence in newspaper the other day. The sentence is A couple of years ago, mine put off a friend who i still miss to this day. I cannot understand why the author used mine here. For me, I will use I in the position. Please help...and thanks.

Look at the sentence BEFORE this one. Was the author talking about a personal attribute? Voice, attitude, behavior, pet ?

I agree with orogeezer. Absent context, I would also use I in the sentence in question. However, context is always important. It is quite possible that mine refers to something in a previous sentence.
