Word "awareness"

I have tried to used "awareness" in my sentence. Do my sentences sound natural?

In our hectic world, many people lack awareness of themselves. They do not know who they really are nor where they are going.

I'd suggest self-awareness in place of awareness of themselves.

"Self-awareness" is the word I needed. Unfortunately, I couldn't remember it when I needed it.
