two ways to shut down a lamp / lantern, by pulling the burning threads down or just to clap on the fire. what is the word/word set used in these scenarios?

"Extinguish" or "snuff out" are the two most common verbs you'll hear for putting out a flame.

"Put out" and "blow out" work for bare flames (ie candles) in BrE.

Please put out the candles before going to bed.
I'll blow out the candle before I leave.

You can "turn down" and "turn off/out an oil lamp or a gas lamp.
