Word "prolix"

I know that the word "prolix" is not often used, but I tried to use it nevertheless. I am wondering if my sentence is grammatically correct.

After more than three hours of a prolix play, only a handful of people were still in the audience.

I think it's more (less un-)commonly associated with rambling speeches, lectures, etc.

Having read the definition (I was unfamiliar with the word too), I would not be sure whether you were suggesting that the play is simply too long or if there were a lot of long rambling dialogues/monologues in it.

I never before saw the word "prolix" in any texts, but yesterday when I saw it, I thought I would try to use it, meaning long and boring.
