Hi
Are there any rules relating to which syllable must be stressed in words, I can't seem to find this topic in my books

I don't think so. And they borrow a lot of words from other languages, so 'stress' can jump among any syllables as it wishes. :)

I can think of some examples, the stress changes the part of speech of a word.

Noun

'record
'present
'refund

Verb
re'cord
pre'sent
re'fund
