There are a few well-known definitions which should help you up.
empathy = identification with and understanding of another's situation, feelings, and motives.

sympathy = a relationship or an affinity between people or things in which whatever affects one correspondingly affects the other.
A feeling or an expression of pity or sorrow for the distress of another; compassion or commiseration. Often used in the plural.
Sympathy = the feeling of being sorry for someone who is in a bad situation

I have a lot of sympathy for her; she had to bring up the children on her own.
I have absolutely no sympathy for students who get caught cheating in exams.
