This is a continuation of a discussion from another thread...

I've taken Red5's advice and removed the flash intro - and any other marketing tips would be gratefully received. It's not exactly a strength of mine ( I know nothing about "spiders" for example)
You could not have made a bigger or more important change to your website at all. I like the rest of your site very much, but my advice was given from a marketing perspective. Allowing the search engine spiders to crawl your site and index it correctly and fully will be a major boost. Give it 4-6 weeks and you will start seeing results. ;-)

Ask more sites for links to your main page, and as long as they are sites related to yours. That will also bring you a major boost in traffic over time. ;-)

<psst>There, that's your primer lesson :-D :-D :-D ;-)</psst>

Will,

It looks like the removal of the splash page worked for you (you have a PR of 5). Are you seeing more traffic now?

Hi Red,

Thanks for your message....traffic is pretty steady to ws at the moment but this is definitely positive - I've done hardly any promotion myself over the past month or so as I've been busy with other stuff. ....So, basically, I'm sure what you suggested has already had a big effect.

All the very best - and thanks again.
Until the next time...

Will

What's a PR of 5? (Curious) BTW, what's UE's PR?

In case I forgot to ask, what is a PR?

Hi Red & Ron,

Nice to hear from you... I keep meaning to get in touch actually to see how we can link up more, become partner sites etc.

Last week, by the way, I was in touch with Torsten at English-Test and am also hoping to work more closely with them. I like their site a lot and have quite a few links to it - their tests, Torsten's articles etc.

Well, the site's going well thanks - and traffic is on the up again after a Christmas/New Year slump. There's another update coming up at the weekend with some new ideas ... so I'll post something about that soon.

OK, all for now - hope things are well with you both....
...and, yes, just what is a PR of 5?!?!?

Best wishes
Will ;)

Looking forward to the update. We should link up more- the trouble is I just get so tied up working on this site- it's endless. ;-)

What is PageRank?

PageRank is a numeric value that represents how important a page is on the web. Google figures that when one page links to another page, it is effectively casting a vote for the other page. The more votes that are cast for a page, the more important the page must be. Also, the importance of the page that is casting the vote determines how important the vote itself is. Google calculates a page's importance from the votes cast for it. How important each vote is is taken into account when a page's PageRank is calculated.

PageRank is Google's way of deciding a page's importance. It matters because it is one of the factors that determines a page's ranking in the search results. It isn't the only factor that Google uses to rank pages, but it is an important one.

From here on in, we'll occasionally refer to PageRank as "PR".

Notes:
Not all links are counted by Google. For instance, they filter out links from known link farms. Some links can cause a site to be penalized by Google. They rightly figure that webmasters cannot control which sites link to their sites, but they can control which sites they link out to. For this reason, links into a site cannot harm the site, but links from a site can be harmful if they link to penalized sites. So be careful which sites you link to. If a site has PR0, it is usually a penalty, and it would be unwise to link to it.

That is interesting. What would cause a page to be ranked PR0?

:)

Either a brand new page that was not yet known about by Google, or dubious marketing techniques (spamming the search engines) leading to a ban. ;-)

website expands?

Let the whold world know here would be better.

As far as I'm concernced, no one of China forums would like to correct others's English mistakes for free, except discussion among students.

I could have passed IELTS early if I knew here before November.

There are many websites that provide free resources and forums like this. Have you looked at our links directory? Go to: https://www.usingenglish.com/links/index.html

May I make some suggestions?

Try:
  • It would be a good thing if the whole world knew about this site.
Try:
  • As far as I know, nobody at any of the Chinese forums will correct others's English mistakes for free, except during discussions among students. (That would be other students doing that.)
Try:
  • I could have passed IELTS sooner if I had known about this site before November.
Eric, could you look at the irregular verbs thread and tell me if there is anything I should put in there? Possibly, you might have some suggestions for doing some things differently?

Any help you can give me would be much appreciated.

:)
