The one I came across is ' works ' but I wonder if ' work ' is accepted ? or both are correct ?

The word 'works' is short for 'workings' : It's in the workings.

workings -> work...s -> works

An artwork? A work of art?

Just keep in mind that the works of something is what makes it work. Somebody who has fouled up the works or screwed up the works has done something to make whatever it is stop working. :wink:
