Is Would the past tense of of Will, how can that be since will is a future auxiliary, how does this work?

Welcome!
"would" is also an axillary verb, and sometimes it is the past tense of "will".

I will go there tomorrow if it doesn't rain too much.
I would have gone there yesterday, but it rained too much.
