[Grammar] wrong punctuation?

I was doing an exercise on fused sentence and comma splices and there was a sentence:

Although you might not believe it, Antonio actually benefits from his chicken scratch handwriting because no one can read it, Antonio doesn't have to worry about using the right word or the correct spelling.

In bold there's a part I don't understand. Wouldn't it be better if the sentence were made into two separate ones?

Yes, it would be better if it was a separate sentence.

Since the second part of sentence gives the reason why Antonio could benefit from his handwriting, don't you think the colon would be more appropriate?

I got your point. As a separate sentence I meant a sentence that is accompanied with an appropriate conjunction:

Although you might not believe it, Antonio actually benefits from his chicken scratch handwriting because no one can read it. Therefore, Antonio doesn't have to worry about using the right word or the correct spelling.

However, thank you very much for the suggestion about a colon. It would never come to my mind.

It could remain as a single sentence like this:

Although you might not believe it, Antonio actually benefits from his chicken scratch handwriting because no one can read it, so he doesn't have to worry about using the right word or the correct spelling.

Use the pronoun instead of the second 'Antonio'.
