what is the differences between hearing and listening?

Listening is a controlled activity-- you can listen at will. Hearing is an automatic response; it is uncontrollable. These are correct:

I was listening to the radio, but I couldn't hear it because your TV was too loud.
Did you hear my question? Sorry, no-- I wasn't listerning.
