Hi guys,

I got a new English (audio) book "Living Language : Easy American Idioms". Intermediate ESL.

- It's all about idioms. This is one I really am looking for. I think I need to learn idioms to have an edge in English.

I think it's really cool, but quite costly. It cost me an arm and a leg to get it. But as long as it makes my English better, I don't mind the price.

* What book helped you a lot with your English?
* And what does it teach about?

I am a Native speaker of American.
Practice, practice, practice.
Songs, TV News, Reading
For some old fashioned easy reading might try the novels of John Steinbeck. Start with Cannery Row and Sweet Thursday

But I don't read novels sir. It's not one of my interests. I do read a lot of non-fiction books though, and also via the internet.

I'd like to start learning about world history this year but I can't decide where to start at. Do you have any recommendations?

I wonder how do you find novelists like John Grisham or Stephen King? Would you say that their writing is/might be useful for language learning? ;-)
Kind regards,
Sebastian

Reading any novels will help your English - but may also confuse you if the author uses idioms constantly. Grisham and King do use language well.

As to studying world history - where do you propose to start, Blouen?

That's been quite a problem for me Anglika. Where do you think is the best time to start at? First civilizations? Middle ages? World war?

blouen,

I've always had a fascination for the ancient history of the Greeks and Romans. Mythology always a'muse'd me!

I've already read the Greek Mythology and it's Roman counterpart...
It gave me good grades in High School, it was very interesting and easy to remember... but I think they've started slipping off my mind now.

I'd like to relate History with Religion and Prophecy. Where do you think should I start?

Studying the religious history of the Middle East is certainly timely and would provide greater insight into the role prophecies have played in that area of the world.

Happy reading!

Yes. You're right, but I think that even the whole world's history is relevant to religion/religious prophecies not just the middle east's.
This is where I get perplexed. I also think that your suggestion is a good start. Thanks!

blouen,

I made the suggestion based upon the challenges the USA is currently experiencing with the Middle East. Certainly, most regions of the world have experienced religious prophecies. Pick a part of the world you would like to visit someday and focus your reading on learning something that will come in handy when you travel!

You're right. Prophecies go around the middle east, and looking at the challenges you're going to, the USA seems to be on hot water. I have a feeling that a big part of Eurasia will be greatly involved in the last day prophecies.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've got some knowledge about the middle east history but I need to go through them again and more...
