Hello everybody!

We all know that it is painful to learn from our own mistakes. It is much better to learn from mistakes of others.

I would like you to tell me how you say the following truth in English:

You do not have to put your fingers in boiling water just to prove to yourself that it is boiling.

or

You do not have to put your fingers in boiling water just to scald them. (It is enough to believe that boiling water can harm you.)

What is your opinion?

Thank you

Your second sentence sounds like you want to punish your fingers.
