Do you know what a "stud finder" is? Used to know where to insert a nail into a wall that is wood boards and drywall. You want to put the nail into the wood. So you need to know where the wood (stud) is.

By analogy here, the character has some sort of device to know exactly where the port is to be installed in the spinal column. You don't want to miss, to try to insert the port in the wrong place. It would be bloody and messy.
