[SUP]24[/SUP] Don't be concerned for your own good but for the good of others.

The word good here is not an adjective because it preceded by the definite article the. It is a collective noun as Collins says, definition # 2, below. My confusion here is that I couldn’t pick up the exact definition of the word good in the given context above. So, what does the good/your own good mean here, please?

adjective
morally excellent or admirable; virtuous; righteous ⇒ a good man
(as collective noun; preceded by the)
⇒ the good

noun
moral or material advantage or use; benefit or profit ⇒ for the good of our workers, what is the good of worrying?

  • positive moral qualities; goodness; virtue; righteousness; piety
  • sometimes capital moral qualities seen as a single abstract entity ⇒ we must pursue the Good
  • a good thing

My suggestion is that it includes everything positive, but I should consult native speakers.

IMO, "good" here means "well-being" or "welfare".

I agree entirely with charliedeut. "Good" means "well-being", mental, physical or both.
