Does "shrinking" refer back to "playing small"?

--------------------------

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness
That most frightens us.
We ask ourselves
Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small
Does not serve the world.
There's nothing enlightened about shrinking
So that other people won't feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine,
As children do.
We were born to make manifest
The glory of God that is within us.
It's not just in some of us;
It's in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine,
We unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we're liberated from our own fear,
Our presence automatically liberates others.

One thing that remains puzzling to me:

The writer says at the beginning: "Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure./It is our light, not our darkness/That most frightens us. " Yet she continues to say that (we should have no fear)"let our own light shine."

Does the writer mean that we humans are self-contradictory creatures?

Re: Your playing small....

She is saying don't be afraid to let your light shine. Discover your talents. Develop them.

Re: Your playing small....

It sounds that she is saying "Our deepest fear is that we bury, rather than let it shine, our power that is beyond measure"?

You have a question mark there, but that is not in the form of a question.

"We are all meant to shine."

The most important thing is that you understand the overall message. The above quote, in my opinion, sums it all up.

You need to reread the quote.

In this opinion, would it be better to not let our light shine lest we suffer our deepest fear?

Okay that it is the gist of the poem.

But how to avoid our deepest fear - because "It is our light, not our darkness/That most frightens us"?

Re: Your playing small....

But how to avoid our deepest fear
I think the author is telling us to overcome rather than avoid our fear.

Re: Your playing small....

You need to reread the quote.
Done as you said.

Our deepest fear is our immeasurable power, so we are afraid to let our light shine.
