Use always and never with the past tense

Is it possible to use the past tense with always or never?

Is it possible to use the past tense with always?
Yes, I always walked to school when we lived in the city. Why do you think it cannot be used in the past?

It is because I thought that always mean at all times not a period of time such as when I was a child, when we lived in the city...

No, it means all the time or all the time during a specified period.

I always got the bus to school as a child but now I always drive to work.
I never walked to school as a child. Now I always work to work.
