Hi,
the context says"Where she stopped the sign read: 'Mme Sofronie. Hair Goods of All Kinds.' One Eight up Della ran, and collected herself, panting. Madame, large, too white, chilly, hardly looked the 'Sofronie.

what is meant by one Eight up Della ran? Does it mean that Della went to aparment no. 18 in the building or what?
thanks

Where did you find this?

In the short story "The Gift of the Magi" by O Henry.

Jellybeans, if you ask any more questions about this story please give it the properly capitalised title and name the author.

That particular example was a typo. The book was first published in 1906 so it is likely to contain somewhat outdated constructions and words too.

Rover, You have referred to "name the author". Did you remove "of" which I guess should be between name and the? Or is it okay to say with no "of"?

"Name the author" is an imperative sentence. It tells you what to do. "Name of the author" is a noun phrase that can function just like any noun.

No, he's saying to i) give the title and 2) name the author. 'Name" is a verb, not a noun.
