It would be difficult to explain the 'why's' of prepositions. That's the thing about learning English, there are so many variants for different situations. I don't think there are rules for learning prepositions, it comes naturally through listening and reading.

Yes, that's right, we use "in" for months and "on" for days and dates.

:up: And, as tedtmc has rightly learnt up "at" for holidays when a particular day is not specified: "ON Christmas day.... at Christmas".
